Résumé
Professional video editing has traditionally been relying on hard- and software from a few dedicated vendors. Currently only a handful of different systems covers the vast majority of professional users. However, these systems are relatively closed and can cause interoperability issues due to codec and format lock-ins. Although open source alternatives have been appearing on the market now and then, they tend to underperform or not appeal to professional users for other reasons.
In this presentation, experienced NLE user and teacher Gisles Boudet will give an overview of the currently available open source NLE solutions and their strenghts and weaknesses. He will take into account the position of NLEs in the whole media production chain and touch on related tools too. Special focus will be given to Cinelerra, a FLOSS NLE. Also see the Cinelerra Workshop on Wednesday 11th July.
